“In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace.” Ephesians 1:7
We always hear that our “sin is covered”. We are told that Jesus died for our sins and shed His blood as a sacrifice, so that we could be saved. But, what does it really mean?
- Because our sin is covered, we have been redeemed. The word redeem means, “compensate for the faults or bad aspects of something”. Jesus took all our faults on His shoulders. He carried the weight of our sin, even though He was a sinless man. How heroic!! Jesus is the bomb ya’ll!
- Because our sin is covered, we don’t have to walk in shame. As stated previously, Jesus has already taken care of our sins by carrying them to the cross. The beauty of this, is that we no longer have to carry that sin. We have the chance to “check-in our baggage” and leave it at the baggage claim for Jesus. I know this sounds crazy, cause in real life we’re always worried about our bags getting lost at the baggage claim. But in this situation the bags are heavy, they’re slowing us down, and someone else has offered to carry them for us. I mean, imagine if someone offered to carry your bags for you at the airport? Those things get heavy after lugging them around everywhere! So remember: the baggage holds you back and because your sin is covered, you can leave the shame of the past “at the baggage claim” (at the cross).
- Because our sin is covered, we have received God’s grace. Grace is “the free and unmerited favor of God.” Unmerited then means “undeserved”. So here we are, undeserving sinners receiving grace from the Creator of the world. What?! Is this a fairytale? Nope! It seems to good to be true, but that’s the beauty of it. This grace that we receive is not based on the works that we do. We can’t work to earn grace and we can never do anything that prohibits God from giving us that grace. We receive grace, because of God’s goodness. And because we receive grace, we should remember to also give grace to others in our life.
Take Away: Your sin is covered. You’ve been redeemed. There is no reason to walk in shame any longer, it’s time to receive God’s grace.
I pray that God gives you the wisdom to understand the depth of His Love that He shows through the grace and covering of our sins. I pray that you will be able to set aside any shame/baggage and follow Jesus freely. I pray that you will learn to extend the kind of grace to others that God has given to us. Most of all, I pray that you learn to love deeply.
“Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.”
1 Peter 4:8
